P4C Space and Aliens


Age: school years 5, 6, 7 and 8

Length: 60 minutes (flexible)

Group size: small to class-size


Learning outcomes:

a) Students will understand key questions that surround the topic.

b) Students will contribute to a whole-class debate about these questions.

c) Students will learn and apply devices and techniques to a piece of writing.


We will have a discussion about the universe and the possibility of life on other planets. Students will be invited to debate a number of questions pertinent to the topic.


This will be followed by a Q&A, along with activities based on specific writing devices and techniques, considering PAF, chosen in advance from one of the following:



  • Poetry

  • Myths and Legends

  • Scriptwriting

  • Descriptive writing

  • A creative story

  • Diary entry



  • Instructions

  • Balanced argument

  • Persuasive, eg an advert, letter, speech, travel guide

  • Newspaper report

  • Formal and explanation writing (including letters)

  • Non-chronological report

  • Information texts, eg leaflet


For example, descriptive writing focus:


A Q&A on the key ingredients of a good story. We will then build a list of key descriptive writing techniques. Using these criteria, each student will develop a descriptive text. They will write a detailed description of a key scene from #galaxygirl.
